What is the best oat milk? To find out, we did a blind taste test with several popular brands. What was best for coffee? Best creamy taste? What about the best one to mix into protein drinks? Here are the ones we think came out on top.

Finding The Best Oat Milk: Our Taste Tests

Oat milk is on a roll.

After a famous coffee chain began using it in their drinks, many of our readers tried to recreate those same flavors at home.

Besides mixing into coffee, folks tell us they also like oak milk for protein drinks or smoothies.

So, we gathered up all the oat milk enthusiasts we know and tried out several brands to find the best bets. And as it turned out, some oat milks worked better in coffee than others—some brands even have “barista” editions which typically have more fat or calories than other plain options.

In case you are new to oat milk, many folks like the fact most brands are nut free, gluten free, soy free and vegan friendly.

What gives oat milk its creaminess? Most brands use oils (sunflower oil, rapeseed oil) as emulsifiers.

After trying out several popular brands and several lesser-known options, here are the oat milks we thought were best:

Best For Coffee

Single packs great for outings
Loved the smooth, creamy texture of this "barista" edition, which makes it especially great for mixing in coffee. Bonus: also works well as a milk substitute in baking.

Best for Protein Drinks

Creamy texture
This milk wasn't as sweet as others we tried—perfect for mixing into protein drinks, in our opinion. Also nice: no gum additives like other brands.

With only 90 calories per serving, this oat milk was 30% to 40% lower in calories than other brands we tested. Yet it still was quite tasty with a creamy texture.

Best Creamy Taste

Tried and true brand
This oat milk was tops in taste—delicious as coffee creamer but also great on cereal. Caveat: 7 grams of added sugar.

How We Pick Products To Recommend

We often turn to our readers (3 million strong!) to find products to recommend. We ask our parent readers for their favorites and consider their real-world experiences in our recommendations.

When we test a product, we always purchase it with our own monies. We do not take free samples, as we believe that compromises our independence.

We also fact check manufacturer information with our own measurements. If a maker claims a product weighs X pounds, we will weigh it to make sure. If the battery life is supposed to be six hours, we will see how it stands up in the real world.

In some cases, we will do interviews with experts in the field to get additional feedback on products.

To get hands-on time with products, we regularly meet one-on-one with gear companies and even tour manufacturing facilities. (When we do this, we pay our own travel expenses).

Why Trust Us

We’ve been rating and reviewing products for the home and families since 1994. We do extensive research, evaluating products with an eye toward quality, ease of use and affordability.

We make our living from affiliate commissions, but we always recommend what we think are the best bets for our readers (not the ones that are the most expensive). We are always looking for products that offer the best bang for the buck.

Our independence is a key reason why we have been doing this so long. As we mentioned above, when we purchase a product for hands-on testing, we do so with our own money.

Here’s another key point: we don’t take money from the brands we review. No free samples, no sponsors, no “partnerships.” Our work is 100% reader-supported!
