Boori has announced they are withdrawing from the US market in 2014. Below is an archived review.

Australian crib company Boori launched in the U.S. in 2011 with collections of expensive nursery furniture that were heavy on a country-style, blonde wood look that sells well in Australia. Unfortunately, that look and the high price didn’t sell at all here in the U.S.

So it was back to the drawing board—the company dropped the “country” look and name (Boori Country is now just Boori) and set off to make the line more eco-friendly and designed to American tastes. Gone (mostly) are the country styles, replaced by cribs in white, espresso and pastel finishes like “Heather” (a light green).

Prices are lower (cribs start in the $500 range now; before $800 was the opening price point). The brand is now GREENGUARD certified to be low emission.

Boori is sold under several slightly different names, depending on the market. Regancy by Boori is the moniker used exclusively for Buy Buy Baby; Urbane by Boori is in other big box stores and features more contemporary styling with smaller furniture dimensions for “modern urban living.”

Overall, cribs run $500 to $800; four-drawer dressers are $500-$700.

Typical of their offerings is the $600 Eton crib, a low profile model with included toddler conversion rail. Dressers run $800 for a four-drawer model. At those prices, you’d expect the furniture should knock your socks off . . . but we were under-whelmed when we viewed the collection recently. While we liked the dressers with their solid wood drawers and dove-tail joints, the use of metal glides and a lack of corner blocks simply won’t cut it at this price level. And, oddly, Boori offers several ready-to-assemble pieces in the Urbane Boori line. We realize this is done to lower prices, but it seems out of sync with the rest of the brand.

Boori’s exclusive deal with Buy Buy Baby features cribs in the $500-$700 range and dressers for $700 to $850. Most collections have three finish options.

We will tick up Boori’s rating this year, reflecting the brand’s lower pricing and better styling. At this price point, however, Boori competes against Munire/Baby Cache and Baby Appleseed in Buy Buy Baby. Both of those brands edge Boori in quality and features. Rating: B
