Best For Kitchen Counters

Great for coffee grounds
Easy to clean and use, this is our favorite bin for countertop use. Sized right for most folks, with soft close lid and carry handle. But it is plastic—and plastic can retain odors over the long term.

Best For Kitchen Counters: OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin

If you are looking for a simple compost bin for a kitchen counter top, we’d recommend OXO Good Grips Easy-Clean Compost Bin. It performed best among the compost bins we tried out in our own kitchen. Here’s why:

What We Liked

• Easy to clean.

• Dishwasher safe.

• 1.75 gallon capacity—not too big, not too small.

• Lid allows for air to flow through.

• Soft close lid.

• Carry handle.

What Needs Work

• Odors can escape.

• Plastic. No matter how easy it is to clean, plastic always retains more odors than steel. If you’d prefer a steel option, see the next recommendation.

Best Stainless Steel Bin: Utopia Kitchen Stainless Steel Compost Bin

One major problem with kitchen compost bins: stink! We quickly realized this as we tried out several bins for this article.

The most stink-free option we could find is Utopia’s Kitchen Stainless Steel Compost Bin. Thanks to a charcoal filter, it controlled odors better than others we tested. And the stainless steel can didn’t retain smells.

What We Liked

 Easy to clean.

• No smell!

• Nice looking.

• 1.3 gallons with charcoal filters to trap odors.

• Tight fitting lid.

• Lightweight (2 lbs).

• Filters can be washed and reused.

What Needs Work

• Replacement filters could be easier to replace. We got it done, but it took a bit too much effort!

• Can leak from the bottom over time? We didn’t see this, but we see reports that after long-term use, small pin holes or splitting in the seams can cause leaks.

Best Small Outdoor Bin: Cutest Composter in the World

Envirocycle’s compost bin, modestly named the Cutest Composter in the World, is our pick for a smaller compost bin. Yes, it is cute! But it does the job . . . and requires no assembly, unlike the larger bin we recommended earlier in this article.

What We Liked

• Made in the USA.

• Turn three times every 3 days.

• BPA free.

• Large doors on spherical drum work well.

• Looks nice!

What Needs Work

• Pricey.

• Water can get into the barrel. And the base doesn’t drain completely, which can make the bin heavy.
