It's official: Canadian furniture maker Morigeau sent out a notice (see below) to their dealers Friday saying the company closed its factory and is going out of business.

Once one of the top juvenile furniture makers in North America, Morigeau was known for its well-made and stylish furniture. Morigeau, along with fellow Quebec-based competitors Ragazzi, set the standard for high-end cribs and dressers in the 90's. At its peak, Morigeau accounted for about 20% of the premium nursery furniture market.
Unfortunately, Morigeau has been in a slow and steady decline in recent years. Facing an onslaught of low-cost Asian imports, Morigeau stubbornly stuck with its Canada production. That worked when the Canadian dollar was low, but when the currency soared in the past year, it made Morigeau's furniture very expensive to export.
Morigeau's response was to push prices even higher—a bad move, as the crumbling housing market depressed sales.  Morigeau filed for bankruptcy in June of this year and hoped to reorganize with new investors. Those plans were dashed by the economic meltdown, which further sank sales of luxury nursery furniture.
It's been the worst of times for many Canadian-based nursery furniture makers. Ragazzi went bankrupt two years ago, selling its name rights to Stork Craft. Status is gone, as is EG, which was sold to Dutailier.
If you own Morigeau furniture and need conversion rails, we would contact your dealer immediately. Since the company is closing down, there won't be any parts or other items available once the current supply is exhausted. And those with Morigeau furniture who need warranty service will be out of luck.

With great sadness I must inform you that on November 14, 2008 Morigeau Furniture closed their factory, and will be going out of business.

Morigeau truly regrets that your customer orders on the Y30 Production WILL NOT be produced. Unfortunately their Bank has taken over the Factory and will not permit Morigeau to continue.

Please know that Morigeau did everything humanly possible to stay in business, since they filed for Chapter 11, on June 12, 2008. They were successful in getting outside contracts to produce some Office Furniture and were working on a Kitchen Cabinet contract. In addition, Morigeau was aggressively seeking some private investors. Ultimately in this troubled economy, time ran out, and they were forced to close.

We want to sincerely thank everyone of you for your past support. We especially want to thank our staunch supporters who stuck by us throughout the GOOD TIMES and BAD TIMES (you know who you are!).
