Is a Bugaboo stroller worth it?
Yes.
Is a Bugaboo stroller worth it? Yes, Bugaboo strollers are worth the investment, in our opinion (we have spent the last 30 years researching and writing about baby gear—read more about us). Three reasons:
1. Build quality and overall functionality. Bugaboo strollers are a premium stroller line with upgraded wheels and frames—note how smooth and easy the Bugaboo Fox is to push. The large canopies that encompass the entire seat are superior to many strollers in this price range.
2. Modern design aesthetic. Bugaboo kicked off the minimalist stroller design revolution when it launched in the early 2000’s and there are a large number of fans who like the streamlined, modern aesthetic of these strollers.
3. Resale value. Thanks to the brand’s popularity, Bugaboo strollers can be resold at roughly 50% to 60% of their retail price after three years, based on our analysis. This assumes normal wear and tear. Even Forbes magazine noted this in a recent article on the brand: “Many new parents probably also know, but Bugaboo strollers also tend to hold their value really well. You would be shocked at the price of an early-model Bugaboo on eBay. I wouldn’t be surprised if every Bugaboo ever sold is still in use via the resale market.”
There have been four safety recalls on this brand in the past 20 years. Read more about Bugaboo’s history on our sister site, StrollerWiki.

Does UPPAbaby go on sale?
Yes.
Yes, Bugaboo strollers do go on sale—at least two to three times per year. Here are the key sales:
1. Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale. Held every July, this sale typically features more than one Bugaboo stroller, at discounts ranging from 10% to 20%. See sale details here. We’ve also seen Bugaboo on sale during Nordstrom’s spring sales.
2. Bugaboo outlet. Bugaboo’s own web site has an outlet section. Here discontinued models are sold for about 25% off the retail price.
3. Pottery Barn Kids clearance. One of Bugaboo’s key retailers, Pottery Barn Kids has a Bugaboo clearance section that features accessories and strollers on sale.
FYI: According to StrollerWiki.com, most Bugaboo sales are for older models: “It is rare for current models of Bugaboo strollers to be on sale—most sales are for discontinued models or colors. Bugaboo does have Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales on their own site, however.”
Why is Bugaboo so popular?
It helps to be first.
Bugaboo was among the first premium luxury strollers on the market, debuting in 1999. It was also among the first to exploit celebrity endorsements, snagging a key appearance on HBO’s “Sex in the City” in 2003.
Continued celebrity tie-ins have kept the brand active on social media. The brand’s high resale value also contributes to Bugaboo’s cache.
Why is the Bugaboo stroller brand so expensive?
Bugaboo is a luxury stroller brand that uses premium materials and fabrics in its stroller line, which contributes to the high price.
The company has also limited its distribution in retail stores, although some models are sold on Amazon.
Bugaboo was conceived as a high-end luxury item from the start, with an emphasis on design and functionality that sets it apart from mass market brands like Graco.
Is Bugaboo non-toxic?
Unclear.
Although the company does promote several environmental initiatives, Bugaboo does not clearly state whether or not it uses flame retardants or other chemical treatments in its fabrics—except for some claims for specific models. For example, with the Bugaboo Fox 5, the company notes that the stroller has “PFAS-free water-repellent fabric coating.”

Is Bugaboo owned by Nuna?
No.
No, Bugaboo is not owned by Nuna. They are two separate companies.
Nuna does make a version of its infant car seat for Bugaboo, which it sells as the Bugaboo Turtle One by Nuna. This co-branding perhaps creates confusion as to who owns whom.
What is an alternative to Bugaboo?
The closest competitor to the Bugaboo Fox 5 is the UPPAbaby Vista. The Bugaboo Butterfly competes against several strollers:
- Babyzen YoYo. See our Q&A on Babyzen here.
- Baby Jogger City Tour 2. See our Q&A on Baby Jogger here.
- Cybex Eezy S Twist.

What is the Bugaboo controversy?
In 2015, Bugaboo posted this photo to its social media of a 23-year old, bikini-clad model running with one of its strollers:
“The photo has been met with criticism from many moms, who say that the ad is unrealistic and body-shaming,” said a report in Adweek.
“This woman’s body looks unrealistic,” wrote one commenter. “We want realistic depictions of women.”
“She is also posed/behaving in an unrealistic manner,” wrote another. “No mom is going to run in a bikini with a stroller.”
Some commenters also took issue with the fact that the ad was targeted at moms. “How can you expect women to buy your product if they can’t relate to the images you’re displaying?” asked one commenter.
Bugaboo responded to the controversy by saying the ad “was intended to be aspirational.” Coverage of the controversy extended to mainstream media outlets like CBS News. “The ad has struck a nerve with many moms, who are tired of seeing unrealistic body images being used to sell products,” said Adweek.
