Logo-1231270661The CPSC approved a ban today on the sale of drop-side cribs in a 5-0 vote. The new standards would prohibit the sale of drop-side cribs in stores and their use in daycare centers and hotels. The rules would likely take effect later in 2010, says an AP article on the move.

The move comes amid a spate of recent recalls for drop-side cribs, including one today for Pottery Barn Kids cribs. The government says at least 32 deaths since 2000 have been attributed to drop-side cribs, whose rails can detach from the crib if the hardware fails or if the crib is mis-assembled. Since 2005, the CPSC has recalled over 9 million drop-side cribs.

Major retailers have already stopped selling drop-side cribs and most major crib makers stopped manufacturing them in the past year. However, millions of these cribs are still being sold in second-stores and on Craigslist.

No word yet if the CPSC plans to recall cribs from defunct crib companies (we discussed this issue earlier on our blog).
