Why? That’s BRU internal code for a product that is about to be discontinued, writes reader Sue A. She discovered this fact when her relatives where trying to track down a discontinued stroller on her registry.

As readers know, Babies R Us tends to discontinue products at a rapid pace . . . but forgets to inform parents who have registered for the about-to-be-discontinued item (despite having your phone, email, address, blood type and so on).

Here is Sue’s story:

I had registered for a Zooper Boogie stroller.  This was back in Fall 2006, my son was due in Feb 2007.  I had 2 sets of family members who were trying to buy the strollers but online the registry stated that
they were both "temporarily unavailable online" and there was a link to be "notified when available."

I called BRU customer service to  see when they were going to be available.  I was told by the rep that
both strollers were discontinued and were no longer available but  there may be a few available in select stores.  I went to my local BRU and of course they did not have them in stock and neither did any
BRU with in 100+ miles.

I called BRU and gave them, as well as the  poor worker in BRU, a piece of my mind (pregnancy hormones raging).  I asked how they could discontinue an item but not let the registrant know.  I was told they have no way of "letting us know."  The nice  worker in BRU did tell me that when you register for an item and the  price ends in "8", it is being discontinued.  I also turned out the  whole Graco pattern I registered for was being discontinued, but that was after I had registered for it.  The customer service rep didn’t
even give a "sorry."

A good lesson for those about to register at Babies R Us: do NOT register for a product whose price ends in 8. And memo to BRU: is it too much to ask to have an email sent to parents  when an item on their registry goes AWOL?
