Price:

IIHS rating: Best bet (both high back and backless mode).

NHTSA ease of use rating: Harness mode: Three out of five stars. Booster mode: Four out of five.

Pros: Machine washable fabric that is easy to remove, nice padding, high weight and height limits. Converts to backless booster. Buckle holders.

Cons: Heavy. Headwings are good for side impact protection and sleeping toddlers, but may block view outside window.

Comments: The Evenflo Evolve combo booster works with a harness (22-65 lbs.) and then as a high back booster (40-120 lbs.) The seat also can morph into a backless booster (same weight limits as the high back mode). Other features include a a seven position headrest and four harness heights plus the seat reclines for napping toddlers.

The Evolve includes upgraded fabrics using Outlast technology, and premium push-button LATCH connectors (Evenflo calls these “Quick Connectors”).

We liked the excellent soft padding and machine washable cover that is easy to remove. There are nice little touches like buckle holders to hold the buckles during loading and unloading.

Reader feedback on this seat has been favorable—folks like the additional side impact protection (called e3), noting the head wings provide a place for a napping toddler to rest their head. A few critics don’t like the head wings, as they blocked their toddler’s view outside the window. Ease of use is generally good (installation is easy), but a few folks thought the seat recline was difficult to work.

At a narrow 19″ wide, this seat should work well for carpoolers, with one caveat: at 20 lbs., it is on the heavy side (a factor to consider for moving it between vehicles).
