Infant Car Seat review: Maxi Cosi Mico 30 / Max 30Web: MaxiCosi.com Infant Car Seat review: Maxi Cosi Mico 30 / Max 30

Price: Mico 30: $200.
Mico Max 30: $250.
Mico Max Plus:  $300

Limits: 4-30 lbs.

NHTSA ease of use rating: Four out of five stars.

Pros: Air Protect side impact protection, four harness heights, deep side wings. Excellent stroller compatibility.

Cons: Canopy doesn’t stay up, pricey for a rather plain seat.

Comments: Maxi Cosi is part of the Dorel Baby Industrial Complex (which also owns Safety 1st and Cosco brands). This is the high-end of Dorel’s car seat line.

There are several Mico’s on the market: the Mico 30: ($200,, 30 lbs.) and the Mico 30: ($200,, 30 lbs.,  pictured at right) and the Mico Max Plus:  $300.

The Mico 30 is one of the lightest weight carriers. Like all the Mico’s, you get the tailored, self-wicking fabric, canopy with flip-out visor, adjustable base and an infant support pillow.

The Mico Max 30 is similar to the plain 30 version but adds “Air Protect” side impact protection and an anti-rebound bar for additional crash protection. For the fashion conscious, this seat comes in a variety of special edition colors in case the standard colors don’t do much for you.

The Mico Max Plus:  $300 adds a load leg for extra stability in a crash plus premium fabrics.

Reader feedback on the Maxi Cosi has generally been positive—fans love the tailored, cushioned seat and ease of installation. The relatively lightweight carrier (8.7 lbs) is also a big plus. On the downside, Consumer Reports latest crash test of a Maxi Cosi Mico Max 30 only registered “basic” crash protection—disappointing for a $250 seat.

As for ease of use, the government rated these seats four out of five stars.

Detractors of the Mico criticize the canopy, which Maxi Cosi has tweaked over the years to improve. We’d stick to the 2015 and later versions to avoid the earlier canopy. The Mico 30 seat is rather spendy . . . considering comparable seats from Britax and Chicco run 25% less.

Stroller compatibility for the Maxi Cosi Mico is good—many (but not all) stroller makers have Maxi Cosi adapters, thanks in part to this seat’s wide use in Europe.

Bottom line: the Maxi Cosi Mico is a good seat. While it misses our top ranking by a few points, we still like the Maxi Cosi Mico for its ease of use and light carrier weight.
