Baby gear maker Kolcraft is also a big player in crib mattresses and one key reason is price: these are some of the most affordable mattresses on the market. An example is their Kolcraft Pure Sleep Therapeutic coil mattress with 150 coils for $48 online—a good deal if you want to go for coil.
Kolcraft also has had a hit with their soybean foam mattresses, which replace some of the typical petrochemical foam found in other crib mattresses with a soybean foam. Made under Kolcraft’s sister brand Sealy, these mattresses are affordable and good quality. Example: the Sealy Soybean Foam-Core mattress for $105 is a good deal (pictured).
The major new addition to the Kolcraft mattress line in the past year are foam mattresses that feature CoolTex gel—these mattresses feature a gel that is cool to the touch. This feature addresses a concern that some memory foam mattresses trap heat. Kolcraft makes three versions of this mattress: the Sealy Cozy Cool Hybrid 2-Stage Coil & Gel Crib Mattress for $130; the similar Sealy Cool Comfort 2-Stage Cool Gel Crib Mattress (no coils in this version; $130) and the Sealy Select 2-Cool 2-Stage Crib Mattress – Cool Gel ($200). These mattresses are GREENGUARD certified.
Recently, Kolcraft added a new brand for eco mattresses called Stearns & Foster, which is a kids’ version of the luxury adult mattress line. They’re offering one mattress: Baby Dynasty Sunrise 2-Stage crib mattress (coil with cotton filling on one side, soybean cool gel memory foam on the other). It uses high density soy foam and includes eco fabrics for $167.
Bottom line: we like Kolcraft’s crib mattresses and would recommend the brand. While the cool gel and memory foam mattresses are nice, they are overkill—the simple soybean foam or coil mattress (around $100) is what we’d recommend.
